DR Flats - mythical strings?

Sign in to disble this ad
I apologize if this has already been discussed recently, but I'm a big fan of DR Hi Beams and have been hearing about them making flat wounds, in fact I had a set on order with Juststrings for about 90 days but they never got any in and I eventually lost interest and canceled the order.

The DR website has had "Coming Soon" on the section describing their flats for about a year ( good thing they make such great strings cause their website is the pits ).

So what's the deal?? Does DR make flats or not, and if so who actually carries them?

They're out there - I just picked up a set at a local shop (they had three sets in stock).

They're pretty decent. I put them on my Dean Pace EUB (I went with them due to the Dean's 35" scale, since all DR strings normally have an overall larger scale). They slightly remind me of D'Addario Chromes - smooth feel, nice thump after breaking in.

I'd just check with your local DR dealer. They should probably be able to order you a set.

I tried ordering them a few times from JustStrings but each time I ordered them I ended up getting a email later in the day saying they aren't in stock. I finally gave up and tried D'Addario Chromes. They sound great on my cheapie SX fretless and I just got a set to put on a new (to me) Ibanez SR1305PM fretless. I'm sticking with them for now.

For the record, I *love* how DR Lo Riders sound on my Stingray, so I'm definitely not knocking DR strings.

That's a hoot, GC is about the only dealer in this area and they said they can't get them. So what's the name of this local shop that you found them at, maybe I should call them and see if they can order them.

They seem to have them here: http://www.bassguitarstrings.us/store/home.php?cat=384

Good service with these folks, too!

I'll check with them, thanks, unfortunately I need a 5 string set and they don't list those.

I'm more and more convinced these are like unicorns, mostly mythical.

PM sent with info. However, I just saw that you were looking for a 5 string set. The sets they have (had at the time) in stock are 4 string. But if you give 'em a shout they might be able to work their magic for you. The guy I talk with there (his name escapes me, sorry) is a bass player and he only uses DR's & supposedly has a good relationship with them. Good luck!

Thanks I'll give them a shout and see what they can do, still seems odd that DR doesn't have these in wide spread distribution.

Feedback

Please post feedback if you do indeed try them. I use TI Jazz Flats now, But I use DR Hi Beams, and Low Riders, and I like them both. The Ti's are really sweet, nice and thick, great feel (though the low tension took a getting used to). Always open to new choices.
