DR Hellborg Series Strings

Well I got a set because of the raves about the "fundamental" that this string provides. After much effort I got the E on my 75 Jazz bass. You need to have strong hands to even get these on the bass. Very hard to wind onto the tuning post and then it behaves like a spring... literally wanting to jump off! That much effort is ok if the sound is killer. It wasn't. That E sounded like a very old flatwound next to the A, D and G Chromes that were still on my bass. Tried EQ-ing and tone variations but the Chromes sounded like they had a MUCH better fundamental and felt a lot better too. Just not for me. Into the box-o-strings that holds all the ones that didn't make it... If possible, try them before you buy them.

They are very odd strings. The huge wrap wire gives them an odd fret clang and the sound is pretty much like they describe....fundamental. It's odd hearing the basic tone with no overtones or harmonics.

I just cant get past anything with Hellborg's name on it. I'm sure it's all great stuff, but after that Bass Player article a few years ago, I steer clear of giving him any money.
