Dunlops are nothing like Hi Beams IMO.

Check out Fat Beams - they are supposed to be fatter sounding while still having the same tension and feel.

I have a few sets of Fat Beams, but haven't tried them yet.

So dunlops are not even close to hi-beam on tension wise? i really don't care about the feels but i want string with tension somewhat similar or close to hi-beam.

This. I use Fat Beams on a G&L SB-2, and they have really nice lows, but still with some stainless crunch on top. They have a loose feel too. I really dig them.

Tone wise, I think I prefer Lo-Riders. But they are much stiffer, and to reduce finger stress I might switch my Lo-Rider basses to Fat Beams.

+1 FatBeams are like, well, 'fatter' sounding Hi Beams... more low mids, less upper treble sizzle, same 'soft' feel and low tension.

Well someone had to ask, so it might as well be me . . . how is the B string on the Fat Beams? If they are soft, I would expect it to be somewhat flabby or perhaps low in volume compared to the other strings. I am mostly concerned about (apparent) volume difference between 5th fret B and open E, for example.

Fat Beams for sure. I use the .130 B so it's not floppy.

The best place to get them is here...he even has free shipping (over $25) until Sunday:

OP mentioned thin sound, but liked the low tension feel. He didn't mention anything about rounds vs. flats.

Dr neons or sunbeams. Both have enough extra articulation and presence to low bass, over any other string I can think of, that this is in part why I switched to them. Excellent pleasant mids thru treble with nice agressive edge imo. Sunbeams are for some reason a little darker sounding then the neons. Even though neons are supposedly just coated sunbeams. I tried them twice, inbetwen neons, same result. To me the neons little bit of extra top end gives them better tonal range for me. Brand new, just lower the treble on preamp a little bit. Then freshly broken in return treble to flat. The sunbeams sounded like I'd expect neons to sound after being well broken in. Still very good though the neons have a little more grind to them in great way. Though sunbeams do touch harmonics easier then neons for me. And somehow give a bit more hi end hifi sound to the bass. Its small but noticeable diff to me. Id rate them from brightest to darkest thus.

Hibeams=brightest and stainless steel. round core.
Neons=full range with extra low end articulation and presence. Nickel and round core.
Sunbeams=darker, little more refined sound but still agressive. Maybe a little lacking in treble top for some. Nickel. round core.

O and like couple said, fatbeams. if you want to stick with steel but just darker oriented sound.

If you are not stuck on stainless steel, Sun Beams will probably fit nicely. I'm going to be changing from Black Beauties to Sun Beams just because even though I personally love the Black Beauties, the stainless growl doesn't work with the band I just joined as well.

I would check out Circle K strings (Circle K Strings). Get a Balanced set with an E string gage similar to what you are using and you will be good to go.

Are all Circle K Strings the "hybrid" nickel/steel strings? I'm looking for less high end and high mid growl out of my jazz than I get with stainless, but don't really like the tone of nickel only as much. I was planing on biting the bullet and trying Sun Beams and trying to make it work for me, but if Circle K's are in between the two, they might be perfect!
