DR Hi-Beams or Dean Markley Blue Steels

Sign in to disble this ad
After trying many different strings over the past few years, Rotos, Slinkys, GHS, & DR I think I have finally found the strings for me.

DR Hi-Beams, however not for the brightness but for the fullness and depth they posess. They do however lack a little fatness. I have heard wonderful things about Dean Markley Blue Steels!

Anybody had the chance to a/b or even try both these strings out at any time ? Pros ? Cons ?

Thanks

Love the blue steels. The just edge out the hi beams by a narrow margin. I find they feel a little softer and have a bit more boiinngg in the slap tone. I like the fingerstyle tone of both but the blue steels win that battle as well for me.

Back when Blue Steels first came out I tried them out. I will admit they sounded great when new, but I had really bad luck with them as they settled in. On two different basses, after about two weeks of frequent playing they went flabby then snapped in the length of one song. There is little warning that they have worn out, but once they go, they go quickly. I thought it was just me, but I have since met two other bassists who when we were discussing strings, and Blue Steels came up said they had similar experiences. Hopefully Markley has improved their string longevity since then, but I have never been willing to give them another try.

Same I did try them back almost like 4 years ago and the biggest problem came from string just snapping. I wasn't playing aggressive... I wasn't slapping I was just thumping with the thumb and it went. It wasn't just that one time too... it happened constantly and I finally decided to give up and move on.
