DR highbeams vs Flats; review

Sign in to disble this ad
ive seen folks asking about a side by side comparison of DR highbeams against their new highbeam flats so i figured i post my experiences so far with them.

ive been using DR highbeams (.40 .60 .80 .100) ever since i started to play bass and they are the only strings ill mess around with. for those of you that use them you know they are bright and punchy, well defined. in my opinion they can be a little too bright, but not overly crunchy, and they can give off alot of finger noise. not sure if that is due to sloppy play but i think i got some decent chops

anyways, the new flats are even better. they take all the best qualities of the high beams and give em a deeper, punchier tone. the punch of the flats is much nicer than that of the high beams, and that says alot since the originals are the best out there IMO. the sound is mellow, yet defined and goes great with my p bass. with some gain on the amp they really come alive and with my dimarzio P/J pickups they are outstanding. adding just a little treble to the mix gives em a sweet sound. playing w/ a pick is even more delicious but i like how i get the motown sound from my fingers.

hope this helps some folks thinking about making a switch, i know the review is kinda vague but its hard to put words on how great these strings are. if i knew the first thing about recording i would offer to post something but id probably end up forgetting.

from my experience too the high beams give off a lot of finger noise...lets just blame it on the strings.

Nice! I've been waiting to pickup a set of the DR Flats ever since I heard about them. DR is the only strings that I've come across that I like. They have just the right about of tension for my playing style. I checked their website and they have no information about the strings out there yet. Juststrings has them listed but they said they don't have any in stock right now so I'm still waiting...

DR Flats

I see juststrings.com has them listed for 5's but it does not say if they will fit a 35" bass. Anyone know?

i find the tension on the Hi-Beams a little less than the Low-Riders.

the tension on the flats its a little higher than the standard high beams but the transition was very easy. this was my first time with flats and it has been smooth sailing so far. playing between the p p/up and jazz p/up on my bass is the sweet spot for me, gives it some upright tonal qualities and keeps everything tight but still with the bottom end intact. when i wanna put a fatter tone ill play up near the neck and due to this higher tension you get more definition than usual with traditional high beams.

oh i almost forgot, the set of DR highbeams i usualy play with is the lite-lite .40 -.100 and the new flats are .45-.105 so this could account for me feeling more tension when i play. between the higher gague, tension and feel from the DRs i used before i notice a difference but i think it is a subtle yet positive one for my style of play, it has realy given me the tone ive been hearing in my head.

Question

Wouldn't a smaller string give you more tension though?

Peace,

Peace,
no. string size and string tension are directly proportional (usually), this is why you get bigger strings to tune down

I absalutely love theese DR flats. I NEVER thought I would like a flat wound string.
I have them on a an old Guild fretless Pilot bass w/active EMG's

Out of the 7 basses I own (some high end) This is my favorite bass to play. The DR highbeam flats, put the ice-ing on the cake
They sound wonderfull with a pic, fingerstyle, and a slap
