DR Neons and Harmonics

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello All,

I put a set of DR Neons on my jazz bass recently. So far so good, except. We play American Girl by Tom Petty. There is a part where Bass Harmonics are played and are prominent.
I have always enjoyed playing this part and hitting those harmonics. However with the DR Neons they dont seem to ring out like they did with my old strings- d'adarrio round wounds- either XL or prosteel.
Has anyone else noticed this?

Did you set the intonation after you switched strings? My harmonics sound great and ring out for a while too on an $80 bass.

Yes, the neons while great sounding dont do harmonics as easilly as for example their sunbeam strings. Sunbeams do brilliant harmonics with ease even though they are a bit darker sounding then the neons otherwise. Ive been using neons for many months now and recently put on a pair of sunbeams to see what sound change if any they have since neons are supposed to be coated sunbeams. Neons will do tap harmonics etc but just not as strongly nor with the added briliance of the sunbeams.

I will add that I think harmonics with neons are very nice, just takes a little more focus in fretting hand to get them as strongly. In some ways I do prefer the harmonics with neons tonal wise, it just takes a little more attention to what ones doing to get them well. I also get them a little stronger with pup blend a little toward the neck pup, whereas with the sunbeams pup blend doesnt matter as much. Depending on your bass, pup blend a little toward neck or bridge may help you out a little for those as it has me.
