DR Rainbow strings

Sign in to disble this ad
Has anyone ever had a "rainbow" of DR Extra Life color-coated strings? That is, each string is a different color (let's say, E=blue, A=red, D=green, G=pink). I have a silver Ibanez EDA and I'm looking to spice it up a bit. The rainbow should look good against a silver body and a rosewood fretboard.

They sell rainbow packs for guitar, but I haven't seen one for bass strings. Has anyone ever done this before? Hopefully DR can sell me a custom pack or something.

They'd look great on my Jazz (in my avatar). Let me know if you find out any info about custom orders; it looks to me like they're guitar only judging by their catalog.

I just checked juststrings.com and it doesn't look like they offer the Extra Life in singles. You may just have to buy a set of each color, and mix your own. Expensive, yes, but four sets should last you a couple of years.

On the EDA subject, my first bass was a blue EDA. Unfortunately, the sound was way too edgy for me, and I didn't know enough to just put some flats on it or something. So, even though I loved the look, feel and weight, I sent it back to AMS after about a week. Now I kinda wish I hadn't.

I would try the different colors first if you haven't. I've been through the black beauties and the pink and now have the peacock blue but it may be too much to have a rainbow effect on the strings. It may get old real fast if you are woodshedding a lot. Live Performace may be good though.

- you'd probably have to get several packs of strings, each pack a different color, then mix and match. i've heard that DR colored strings sound good, but haven't tried them. i like the idea of rainbow strings, though.

- the notion that strings and colors could have a visual quality called "gay" is nearly unintelligible to me. what is that supposed to mean, exactly? the only possible sense i can make of this is that you're using the word "gay" to indicate that the strings would look bad, or look stupid, or look silly. but using the word "gay" as a synonym for bad, or stupid, or silly, is prejudicial, discriminatory, stereotyping, and offensive.

all of my basses are black (well ..except for the Ricky 2001 my old guitarist destroyed ... and the white short scale Jazz that I never play ... it came with a little practice amp) and bright red strings would look incredible on them. Problem is what do those coloured puppies sound like?

Whats worse, a rainbow-stringed bass playing death metal or a badass stealth with black strings playing Hannah Montana covers?

If it wouldnt cost me hundreds of dollars, I'd definitely deck out my 6 with rainbowed strings. This idea actually makes me consider getting 2 sets and alternating the colors, like pink/blue/pink/blue/pink/blue or something like that.

DR Black Beauties started losing color real fast. Frankly, I can't believe they'd put a product like that on the market. Have they improved? Do the other colored strings stand the same chance of having their color flake off before the end of the life of the strings?

The rainbow is a symbol of the gay community so, rainbow strings would look gay. I'm sure that's all he meant.

By "Gay", I think he meant "Goofy" - and I generally agree...

HOWEVER

I'm a *big* fan of irony... So the notion of a guy in a heavy rock band playing with pastel pink or blue strings just cracks me up - in fact, were I in a death metal band, I would most CERTAINLY put pink strings on my axe. And I'd have a fuzzy stuffed kitten attached to my strap, as it was climbing up...

Now, were I in a coffee house act, playing behind a sensitive female singer... Red strings, black bass, anarchy symbol, upside down crucifix... Like I said, I like irony (or is it paradox... I never can keep that straight!)

Oh - and about colored strings: Who cares what they look like as long as they sound and feel good, right?

hahahaha!

I think it kinda depends on the bass you're puttin them on and how you think it'll match up, if it doesn't look too far off, then go for it...well, as long as yer a desciple of Bootsy/Freekbass

You're right on. Irony is just something unexpected that doesn't seem to fit, often marked by an element of coincidence, or a statement used in such a way as to suggest the opposite of its literal meaning. A paradox is something that seems to be self exclusive, or a relationship between two things that seem to be mutually exclusive, but they just are anyway. So, I guess your scenarios could be either one, but I'd lean toward irony.

I thought he meant homosexual. Rainbow colored IS the color of the gay community, they take pride in that. Its really your own problem if you take calling a rainbow-colored thing gay as a derogatory comment...I would just see that as "hey, maybe I dont want to represent the homosexual community, since I'm not gay." Don't bash on him too much for calling rainbow strings gay looking, as they kind of are. Doesnt mean they don't look cool on a bass though.

PS I'm not gay.
