DR Red Devils

I picked up a set of DR Red Devils for my Lakland Duck Dunn, they look cool, the sound is not bad, but the coating insulates to the point that the bass buzzes when your playing. This bass was dead quiet before I installed them. I took them off and replaced them with standard strings and the bass is quiet again. Be cautious, this made me check my wiring and caused a great deal of paranoia until I narrowed it down to the strings.

This is common with most all coated strings as the coating is non-conductive. Roger Sadowsky did some testing on coated strings to determine which ones have this issue and posted a list somewhere on his website of strings that use conductive coating if I recall correctly. The two most popular coated strings, DR and Elixir, were not on that list.

Yes, unfortunately the DR K3 Coating is not conductive of electricity. This is only an issue on some instruments it seems.

Clear Tone and D'Addario EXP appear to be the only ones that ARE conductive.
