DR Sting hunt

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi bought a bass with DR strings ( as I received from seller) however never identified the specific string. They the the 105 medium set ( four string ) type. I purchased some DR sunbeams
and while a nice string they are far less flexible compared to the original strings I had on this (purchased with bass). I did notice that the strings that were on this were also stainless steel ( or it seems as the nickel look quite a bit shiner and brighter in appearance). What I am looking for is the same very flexible string that I originally had. The Sunbeams are nice but far brighter
and the tension of the string is much greater ( like playing a piano string ) . Anyone else have any input I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks in advance....

Flexible Stainless, sounds like Hi-beams, but usually hi-beams and Sunbeams real close in tension.

I'm confused, are the originals more or less, your post is ambiguous.

If they had more tension than the SunBeams, they were not Hi-Beams but Lo-Beams which are done on a hex core ( more tension) and avail in both SS and nickle.

I ONLY use nickle Lo's anymore. I dig the tension. It may require a small tweak of the truss rod, btw.

In response

I am looking for lower tension . The original strings were stainless steel from what I can gather ( less bright looking than the sunbeams which are nickel plated ). The sunbeams are far tighter than the original strings to state this again.... I am not looking for a high tension string. I am looking for this same string which is

1) a DR string
2 ) a round core string
3) almost has the feel of a slinky string
4) could be one of the following from my research
a) Fat Beams
b) High Beams - are stated to be very flexible ( I assume tension)
c) Jonus Hellborg but these are only in nickel ???

My guess is the originals you liked were Fat beams, but I'm not so sure I'd be able to tell the difference in tension between those and Hi Beams.

I like the 45-105 Marcus signature FBs a lot though, and I usually prefer 40-95s or 45-100s, so they might be lower tension. Big help, huh?

I don't see how anybody here can possibly tell you anything that you don't already know - since it would be pure speculation based on only secondhand information.

I've got Fatbeams on my MTD, (Love them), and I haven't used Hi-beams is quite some time. Fatbeams are wound slower per Marcus Miller's specifications. Not sure if the slower wind would decrease or increase the flexibility, but I use the Signature 45-105 strings.

Thanks for the help

Just happened to take the strings off and into a store that I was lucky enough to get help with a direct comparison between the DR strings. As it turns out RedsFan was right as the string I was looking for is the FatBeams and same set here IE 45-105.. I have to say after many years these are some the easiest to play strings I have had my hands on, aside from great tone.. Just love em... Who says playing bass has to require hard fretting and difficult hand work. These strings take a lot of that away....

Thanks again...
