DR strings Question (the low B)

Sign in to disble this ad
Anyone here using the DR light gauge (.40 .60 .80 100) 5 string set with the 130 low B?

I like the idea of having a thick, tighter low B with the light gauge on the other four strings, but I'm worried it's not going to "match up" well- like the low B doesn't belong.

Any experience with this set anybody?

I haven't done that specifically, but have used Laklands light 5 string set 40-60-80-100-128. I wish more companies would put out sets with this gauge. It works especially well with 35ers for me.

That's good news! I was worried that it might not work out.

If you want to get scientific about it, you can check out string tension charts to see how uniform the tension would be from string to string. I'll try to find one here in a minute.

To me, that set feels pretty good, and if I remember correctly, has more uniform tension than a 45-65-85-105-125 set (where the B is low and the D is higher tension).

I actually would like to try a set that goes 40-55-80-100-130 to get even closer tension specs.

I use DA XL's on my Jazz and they are 45-65-80-100-130, which is fairly close to what you describe and I think they sound very balanced.

+1 ,tried many times .
Hate the sensation of the B softer than the other strings

I did even swap ,when in tour, different brand 128-130 when i did'nt found the same brand (i would'nt do for record off course).
Change drastically feeling and invite naturally to use the B string more.

Tension charts help as said ,as well.
Tried "30 (or 32 dont remember) -40-55-80-105-130" for a Sixer also , and worked well on one bass of mine.
Good for toying with taps /fast scales and blah and still get the thick on lowers
