DR Sunbeams equivalent

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi!

My main bass is a Ibanez SR-506 on wich i use DR Sunbeams for 3-4 years. I really love the sound of those strings but i have a hard time to lower the action on the B string. Is there anything strings comparable sound a gauge wise but with a tapercore B string ? I'd like to stay with nickel's.

Did DR start making the sunbeams with a taper core? The only DR's with a taper core I knew of were the long necks which are a tapered version of the Highbeams and are stainless steel.

He is saying he wants something similar to Sun Beams but WITH a tapercore. I would go for Circle K's balanced tension, you probably won't go back to the Sun Beams after you try them!

This, I wouldn't be surprised if more manufacturers start realizing how awesome balanced tension sets are for bass after losing a lot of business to Circle K.

Fodera perhaps. They are the only other round core string I know of, which is what gives Sunbeams their magic.

You could also just try another B string. I use Sunbeams on my Brubaker 5 string, but currently use a Curt Mangan B string because it's a little tighter thanks to it's hex core. Since it's a 34" scale I needed the B to feel a little tighter.

I just discover R.Cocco. What are the feel of them. Are they smooth as the Sunbeams. It seems ( By reading on there site) that they are tapercore. But i'm not able to confirm as i didn't find this information anywhere else.

You sure Ken Smith strings are round core? I think they're hex core.

You are correct... I thought they were round, but upon closer inspection, yeah, they are hex..

DR does not taper any of their round core sets. As a matter of fact, Black Beauties are coated Hi Beams (round core) but DR offers tapered B strings for the Black Beauties; those tapered B’s are hex core.
