DR Sunbeams vs. TI Jazz flats

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey I was wondering if someone with experience could tell me how these two strings compare. Now I kno one are rounds and the other flats. I'm more interested in how they compare once broken in.

The main thing I am wondering is how they compare tension-wise. I've heard Sunbeams are pretty loose compared, say, to Roto66's (which I have used on my pbass). And I've heard the TI's are loose compared to LaBella flats (tried the 45-105's also on the same pbass).

My two favorite strings!

The Sunbeams are significantly lower tension to my fingers...

IME the TIs are more supple, and feel like they are lower tension than do the DRs, when both are broken in. Both have round cores, which are more flexible than the standard hex cores used in most other strings.

I would recommend trying them both. As long as you don't cut the TIs you can sell them used on TB. You won't recover your pruchase cost, but you can pay for the replacement strings. YMMV.

My two favorite strings, too!

Yeah, IMO the Sunbeams seem a little looser than the TI flats. One of the reasons I chose the TI flats is because they supposedly are the lowest-tension flatwounds available, and they are very close to the same tension as the Sunbeams - or so I was told. I also chose the TI's because they have some killer mid's!

I actually just bought a set of each for my two Stambaughs. The TI's are going on the fretted and the Sunbeams on the fretless.

I've never tried the TIs before, but I love Sunbeams.

godzilla vs megalon! these 2 strings are about as different sounding as you could ask for,but they both are roundcore strings,so they are very flexible and have lower tension than rotos. the sunbeams are very bright/percussive/grindy sounding, and the ti's are the epitome of smooth thumpiness.....so it depends on whether you want old school motownish thumpa or moderne metal snap.....

I dont find the sunbeams bright at all once they are broken in.

Yeah, I was going to say the same thing. Two weeks in and I wouldn't call them bright or percussive at all. And they stay great sounding for a long time. Grindy? A bit, but (at least on my bass with Fat Stacks) in a very warm, jazz-bass growly type of way.

I'm not a guy that likes bright strings, and I love Sunbeams.

I've got two month old Sunbeams on a Fender Custom Classic Jazz and eight year old TI flats on a Stingray SR4.

I'd say the Sunbeams, while not bright, have a nice clarity to them. I feel they're a great, all around string.

I'd say the TI flats have this warm, chocolaty, "give your mama a big hug" kind of feel. A very supportive sound; it will hold up the whole band.

While they're both very flexible, my vote goes to the TI flats as being most flexible.

Oops - I play my Sunbeams detuned a half step! That's why they feel a little looser than the TI's!!! To quote Emily Litella: "Nevermind".

Leon D has it right. Sunbeams are brighter w/o being harsh. They are tighter than TIs too. At present Sunbeams are my favourite strings. I have a set on my five-string Sadowsky UV70 and they sound terrific.

Hey thanks to all u guys who spoke up that have tried the DR's or TI's. Rite now I'm rocking some Fender 7250M's on my P, but what I really want do is eventually try the Sunbeams. And prolly the TI's somewhere down the line (because I seem to go back and forth btwn flats and rounds).

One quick question... I see ppl sometimes say when regarding trying a new string, "not to cut the ends" (especially on pricey ones) so that u can possibly re-sell/trade them to a fellow TB-er... Question is, how could I possibly install a string on my pbass without cutting them??? I tried to not cut some LaBella flats when I tried them but there was no chance they would've fit.

had a set of sunbeams on my Peavey & the volume seemed to drop on the D & G strings, playing at home it wasn't too noticeable, but in the studio with the band it was VERY noticeable

put on a set of old JF344's

problem solved

nice volume & clarity on every string, especially the D & G

I smell a new club on the horizon...

Dibs on TI jazz flats and Sunbeams club #1!

They're the only 2 kinds of strings I use anymore. TI's on the J, Sunbeams on the P.

I'm enjoying the Sunbeams on my Jazz but eventually I bet I'll have TI flats on all my basses. Just a great string all around for me.
