Question Drop to G#

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi everyone. This is my first time on the site and i could really use some advise. I recently purchased a Schecter Stiletto Studio 6 and i'm hoping to drop it down to G# standard (G# C# F# B E A) without changing my string tension significantly. The scale on this bass is 35". My bass teacher suggested i try DR coated strings but i could not find a thicker gauge than .030. Do you think that set would work or do i need much thicker strings?

Thanks in advance to anyone who has tried this before and could help me out!

Matt from murder by death (we had an in depth conversation a couple of weeks ago) tunes that low on his 4 strings using 110-50.

I used to have a 34" scale 5 string tuned to drop G#. Ended up using a GHS bass boomer .145 gauge for the "b" string. It worked great for me down to low F#. Got it from juststrings.com, used a four string set for the rest.

Conklin sells strings for low F#(.165) and for low C#(.194). They're pricey, but I'm sure they're good. There's not really a huge choice out there in strings large enough for these low tunings.

Well i don't like my strings flopping around like that. I tried down tuning with what i have currently (130 i think, might be 125) and didn't like how it felt. And i don't want to go so big that i have to widen my nut like i did on my last bass. Also don't want to go through 5 sets of strings trying to find the right gauge so that's why i'm asking

you may have to though.

the D string on the 110 set i'm currently using is too big for the nut. They have a great tension and are perfect for playing drop C in my band, but next set of strings i'm going to stick with 105's for the sake of widening my nut.
