Which DR's are right for me??

Sign in to disble this ad
Either the Marcus Miller set or some standard Hi-Beams.
I mainly play rock, funk and some metal. My main playing style is a tie between finger-style and slap.
I barely ever use a pick or tap.
Due to circumstances beyond my control I cannot change my strings for a few months (probably about 6 months....) so these need to keep their tone for a long time.
I like a bright tone, and my main bass is an Ibanez BTB200.

Any suggestions (and the reasons why) are appreciated.

Thanks everyone!

I would go with the hi Beams man. I pretty much play the exact same stuff as you and i found that had that long lasting "rob trujillo clank"

Get the strings you like the most and check some of the "soaking strings" threads.
It will keep your strings fresh.

Either one could work for you. Hi-Beams are probably slightly brighter, with a little more presence in the upper mids. Fat Beams are probably slightly darker, with a little more presence in the lower mids. But the differences are fairly subtle. Variations in your technique, playing style and gear could easily override any difference in the strings. But I would say, get the Hi-Beams...

All of the stainless strings from DR sound great. I presently don't have the HiBeams on any of my basses. But my favorite bass has fat beams and fit perfect for what I am looking for. If I remember right, the Hibeams were a little too bright for me. I also have DR Lorider Stainless on my Grendel 5 and they are also bright but give a really nice growl.

If you like bright sound why not buy some cheaper strings and change them twice more often?

I would agree w/ this statement. I really like the Fat beams, and I also like the DR coated strings as well. The Hi-beams would be the best all around string if you want typical roundwound zing- the Fat beams if you want a more subdued tone... but the difference in tone isnt radically different, imo

Beings you play all styles go with the Fatbeams.
Hi-Beams are a bit too bright for all styles. Fatbeams,
tend to be more even and balanced in tone.

fatbeams 'seemed' to maintain a familiar tone longer than hibeams IMO.

I use lo-riders. I pretty much play all of the same styles as you. I like Hi-Beams, but the round core makes them too flexible and very zingy. Lo-Riders are just right for me.
If you want to make your strings last try FastFret or DR's liquid polymer.
