Dumb question

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a packet of Ernie Ball Power Slinky bass strings and it has the numbers: 55, 75, 90 and 110 listed on it. I was just wondering if the higher the number, the thicker the strings (heavier gauge)?

Sorry if this is a really noob question :P.

Yes, and that would generally be considered a 'heavy' set, FYI.

It's in inches. The actual measurements of the diameter of the strings are: .055" .075" .090" and .110"

A medium set is usually .045 .065. 085 .105

So....... You're heavy.

If your bass has a lighter set, (it probably does) than those, be aware that changing to the heavier set will most likely require a set up on your bass. Judging by your question, that would be something you'd need to have done by a professional luthier, and may cost anywhere from $25-$65. IOW, don't use those strings, unless your bass already has the exact same ones on there now, or you'll have a set up done.

I should have mentioned I'm currently using the 55's and they're fine. I'm thinking of going up to 75's but perhaps I shouldn't then?

you might as well buy a five string set and tune them up 5 half steps if you want such heavy guages. 55 is very big for a g string.
