E string didn't fit my guitar...Help?

Sign in to disble this ad
I just got a new bass, Fender Precision 51 reissue, and I have been trying on new strings. I first put on a pack of TI flats and everything was fine. I wanted to go back to round wounds, so I asked my buddy and he recommended D'addarios nickel. when I put the pack today, the string wound became thinner before the nut. It totally messed with my action and got nasty buzz. I decided to put a pice of paper/tape to compensate and it works okay for now. My question is does D'addario make another pack that will fit or are there other brands that make round wounds that will fit. I dig the sound of the D'addarios but just have that issue with it. Anyways, is there another way to tell what brand to brand will fit my guitar?

Maybe you need to cut more of the string off?

sounds like you purchased short scale strings. you might be having an issue with stringing through the body causing the strings to be too short, in which case you'll want to make sure that you use longer scale strings. FWIW i've used D'Addario nickel roundwounds for about 17 years with NO problems like this. i've owned a few basses too that i've tried these on ...

The box says long scale. I know that the string thru body is the issue but I am sure plenty of people have had this bass and not have an issue with it.

Well, if the box says long scale and they're too short, either (1) D'Addario doesn't build them long enough to go through-body on a 34" scale bass, or (2) the wrong string(s) somehow ended up in your box.

I don't use D'Addario's, but I would put money on (2).

I had the same issue with a Fender Jazz and D'Adarrio strings. They aren't made for string through the body setups. Go straight through the bridge if you can, or get different strings. I know DR's are long enough, and Fender strings will work also.

Use extra long scale if you want to string them through the body.

What other brands sound similar to D'addarios that won't have this problem. I looked into the super long scale but the gauges were different on the D and G strings. I heard DRs are good but too bright. I want to stick to nickel wound if possible.

+1

It's why the 'Extra Longs' were created.

Super long scale packs are different gauges than the long scale. The thing that sucks that it's only the E string and not any other ones. I will check out the sunbeams when these get old. Are there any other brands that are similar to D'addarios nickel besides DR?
