Unhappy EBMM Sterling + Flats = :-(

Sign in to disble this ad
Long story short is that I purchased a set of Chromes to put on my 1998 Sterling. E, A and D all strung and tuned fine but when I tuned G up to pitch the sharp edge on the tuner slot cut through the outer wrap of the string causing the core to slip out of the tuner. Cut it a little shorter and tried again but same thing happened. Contacted D'Addario and their response was basically, "Yeah, that could happen." Purchased a set of Ernie Ball flats thinking that surely EB Bass + EB string = success. Even filed down the edge of the tuner slot so as not to be as sharp but same thing happened to the Ernie Ball G string. Now I am out $60+ and have nothing to show for it but one seriously failed experiment.

Sounds like you have horrible luck and/or are doing something wrong. Are you measuring the string 3" past the peg, bending it 90 degrees, and cutting just past the bend before you insert it as deep as it will go into the tuning peg?

Ask both string companies to send you a new G free of charge.

Not $60 out, try getting free strings from them, or worst case scenario, buy a single string (music store or online).

Don't know what to say, but I have never had that issue (with my Stingrays or other basses).

What gauge?

I have an extra Chromes .045 if that will help... Brand new, just broke up a set to help someone out with a D string...

Drop me a PM with your location...

They do not sell Chromes in singles except for C's and B's...

Well, you saw the response I got regarding the Chromes. Have contacted Ernie Ball and we'll see what they think. Either way it's a bummer that I can't put flats on that bass.

bummer, i was really wondering how that would sound. I have heard good talk on these forums about flats on a sting ray..

How did the rest of the strings sound?
