Elixir 5-string sets discontinued?

Sign in to disble this ad
I just got an e-mail from Juststrings.com that Elixir discontinued manufacturing 5-strings sets and I got the advice to order 4-strings sets with extra Bs. Is this true? It seems awfully silly to me, since 5-strings basses are really not so rare anymore.

they have a big ad in BP.... buy 4 string sets and then buy the B or C or both depending on your needs.

That's how I use to buy strings for my tenor 5

Hmm.. maybe it's time to try out those Warwick EMP strings I am mainly interested in coated strings since I feel that they don't eat away the fingerboard of my fretless basses so much.

Hello from Germany,

first they discontinued the Polywebs, now no more 5-strings. Am I allowed to introduce my latest conspiracy-theory: the other string manufacturers offered them a huge amount of money to stop them offering their strings. I have Polywebs on my favourite bass for more than 8 month now. They didn't sound overly metallic and trebly like other roundwounds fresh out of the box before dying ten days later. And they still sound as good as on day one.
I'm going underground if I can't get their polywebs anymore.

i think it is because they arent making any money on them.

they stopped making the polyweb coating, and when i asked why, they said it was a marketing decision.

which means, guys like me, who use polyweb strings because they last longer then any other coated string, have to suffer with the "not as long lasting" nano's because we will end up buying more nano's, hence them making lots of money.

i dont know why they stopped making the 5 or 6 string models, but that too is probably a way to make more money. it just sucks because now i have to change my whole style of playing(going from pick to finger) if i cannot find another set of strings that last and sound as good as the polyweb strings. nano's sound great, but if you use a pick, forget it.

as for emp's. i wouldnt waste your time. i tried them. honestly, if you are looking for something like elixirs, good luck, ive tried 90% of the coated strings with no luck.

up next, wyres coated strings, and or the 24 karat gold jobbies.

Thank goddess they still offer taperwound B strings in both long and extra long scale. So, I'll still be able to build the sets I want.

Assuming dealers carry all the necessary components, building my own 5-string set is only a slight inconvenience.
