Elxir vs. DR

I'm trying to decide between elixir strings and DRs and was hoping for some input. I have an Ibanez SR505 bass and play in a hardcore/screamo type band and was wondering which would be best. Or should I try another type of string entirely?

Both are really good choice.

Depends if you feel you need the "new string" sound and if you sweat a lot. How many weeks does a "normal" (uncoated)set last on you?

I personnally prefer DR's, but I'm not really into the very bright sound of new strings and I don't sweat a lot.

Elixir are a good alternative. Last longer but I've found they are not a deep sounding as the DR's.

I haven't tried the DR coated strings... I like the Elixirs way too much to be curious.

Elixir Nanowebs will definitely last longer than DR uncoated strings. DR uncoateds will be brighter to some extent.

I had th Elixirs on my Carvin lb70p for a couple years til I decided to try something else. Could have gone longer. Didn't have all the high end that I would have liked but they weren't gummy from sweat. The poly/plastic coating starts to fray where using a pick but that's just asthetics. I have the black beuties on my yamaha bb605. More high end, good for slapping and harmonics. The black coating also will eventually wear but again, just a difference in color. Adds character to the bass. They are rougher on the fingers however. I think the thinner coating on the DR's is applied to the single wrapping before the string is wrapped around a core string. The Elixirs appear that the coating is 'dipped/applied' after the string is made.

I'm a fan of DRs.

Lo-riders and Black Beauties are great strings.

I've used both, and I like Elixirs they have a different sound than any other string I've used, and I really like the fact that they come with a tapered B string. If DRs had a tapered B I would use them more. I use Ken Smiths Burners at the moment, they have anice funky sound like the Elixirs, and they also have the Tapered B.

How do the coated compare to High Beams in feel and tone?

I've had my DR Hi-Beams for over a year now. The tone just keeps getting better

That is good to know. I have them on a Fender 51P RI and really like the tone so far.
