As you may know from my previous post , in my quest for tone I have ordered a set of Ernie Ball Flatwounds, however there seems to be very little info about them on the net. Has anybody here tried them? Are they any good? What kind of sound do they have? What do they sound like when they are broken in? All comments welcome |

They sounded pretty good -- warm & thumpy once they were broken in. The only thing I didn't like about them was that there was too much of a tension difference (for me) between the B and G strings. Mostly, I felt the B was a bit floppy, though the G was a shade tight. If you're playing a 4 I don't see this being a problem.

I've never found the B string to be a problem, although I can see what PSPookie was talking about. It's really nothing that technique can't overcome. |

| | | | Hi , Thanks for the replys , have tried the strings and can't get on with them , strings are too metallic sounding. I guess I'm just more of a Tapewounds person but curiosity got the better of me. Have put them on my backup bass and put my Roto Tapewounds back on and nothing seems to beat the Roto Tapewounds , I haven't found a flat yet that has the same deep , deep lows and the same thump. I guess the nylon supresses the part of the sound that I don't like on the other strings, the metallic part of the sound. |

Surprisingly, I like the way they slap. |

I would imagine that fender flats are probably darker sounding than the ernie balls from what ive heard from other people. They do have the silk wrapping on the ends , its a blue silk wrapping. |

| | | | i remember buyin a 50-105 set, then send my jazz bass to the tech to set them up.
yeah, too much tension and too big, but the biggest problem with them is that they seemed a bit defective. the A and D string were a bit... "rough", your finger just didn't slide from fret to fret. it was really annoying and made the bass a pain in the butt to play.
i hope some other strings will be better. planning to try some d'addario chromes... |

If you're gonna try them, give them time man. Like a month or so (if you don't play a lot) to mellow, and when they finally do, ah sweet sweet tonal goodness | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
