Thumbs down Ever get a set of strings you HATE?

A few months ago I tried Fender nylon tapewounds on a fretless junker I put together. I absolutely loved them! So I ordered some for my Palaedium. I accidentally bought the Nylon filament ones.

My god I hated those things. The absolute worst strings I've ever tried (though they may work really nice on my ABG). I love Fender strings so I had a difficult time admitting my mistake and finally taking the damn things off, which I did last night. It's hard to believe how wonderful the Fender nylon tapewound strings are and how godawful the filament wound ones were. But I gave them a try.

I got a pair of medium Dean Markley Blue Steels which were absolutely horrendous; no TONE, just weak mids and clacky highs. I put them on my P-bass with a Seymour Duncan 1/4 lbs, and had to change them in like a week and a half. I put on Medium Earnie Balls; what a difference! I know Ernie balls aren't exactly boutique strings, but they work for my bass, so...No more Blue Steels!

I HATE elixirs. I like my tone to be very lively, and elixirs always just sound dead. Ugh.

+1 on the Blue Steels. Didn't like the tone, and thanks to my acidic hands, they died two days later. Ugh!

I had the same experience many years ago when the Blue Steels first came out. Something like 1989? I tried them and despised them.

Back in the day DeAdario made a copper plated string called Copper Reds. They were cheap, turned your fingers green and went dead in about 3 gigs.

I didn't like LaBella bronze acoustic bass strings. Low output (it's only core that is magnetic), feel like a file and have no mids. Killer slap tone, but I play mostly fingerstyle. The only reason I had these on my bass was because it was a gift.

I was to this day most disgusted by Fender series of strings.
Like, man, any type I got that they made was horrid...

Any of those coated strings....don't like the way they feel or sound.

The colored ones look cool, though...that's about it.

Rotosound flats - I didn't know flats could chew up my fingers so badly.
GHS bass boomers - dubyaTEEeff? 3 hours of playing and they were nearly dead.

I would have to agree on the Blue Steels They were dead from the start and were on and off in a matter of hours. Would never buy anything with Made produced or endorsed by Dean Markley again.

Try the flats. They're excellent.

Fender Strings

I tried a set of Fender Flats once. Worst strings ever for me. Tension was way to high. I'll stick to TI Jazz Flats.

LaBella Super Steps - Dead out of the box, and no, they weren't shop-shelf dwellers.

I hate them all. I have not found a string that I am completely happy with. I have tried everything.

I don't like overly bright strings I have trouble finding a round wound that is warm enough for me. To my ears, everything sounds too clanky. When they sound decent, they are too stiff.

So I try out flats...Most are too dead. Except for the D'Addario Chromes. Those have a wonderful tone, and are nice and responsive to slapping too. BUT, they are just way too stiff and have too much tension for me. I have also tried the TI's. Those feel great, but too midrangey for my tastes. If I could get the feel of the TI's with the sound of the Chomes, I would be completely happy with my strings!
