Ever had a string go dead?

My Labella flatwound E string seems to just thud on B and C notes. It almost sounds like a deadspot on the neck. However, I just started noticing this about a month ago and never recalled the issue before. My bass is a Stambaugh and the quality of the craftsmanship is outstanding.

The string is probably over 3 or 4 years old... maybe more. Never change my strings and like that worn in flatwound sound, but not this thud thud sound I'm getting here.

Just wondering if perhaps after all this time the string has just gone dead. Its either that or a deadspot on the neck.

Strings can go dead. Heck, you can get new strings that are dead every once in a while.

Bummer. I love the feel and sound of these strings. I guess I'll have to buy some new ones and work the eq to get close to the sound.

I had an acoustic geetar string once that was totally borked. Intonation was completely out by the 2nd fret. I'd never heard of it before. Does it happen much?

Strings generally go dead long before the 3 yr mark. But fair amount of flatwound fans like that sound.

I dont mean dead as in no zing or highs. I mean dead as in it sounds like your hitting a pillow against the wall.

I love the flatwound thump, but the notes have to have some resonance.

Sounds like time for new strings. If you get couple to three yrs use out of the strings for flatwound mellow etc but still resonant, Id say that was really long lifespan but kewl one for the purpose.
