Excessive tone brightness after restringing

Sign in to disble this ad
Today, I've just cleaned (using AxWax) and restrung my bass, after quite sometime of playing without cleaning, and any note is much more brighter than it used to be, specially on the D and G strings. (I'm using flats)I already noticed this on my other bass, but it was after I boiled the strings.

Does anyone happen to know to get back to the old, heavier tone, not this bright one that came up after cleaning? It kinda annoys me.

Thanks in advance

Play the bass for a while and the strings will become dull once again. New strings do not have the gunk and finger oil that come from playing and are able to vibrate better causing the bright sound. Boiling strings removes some of this gunk and brightens up the sound. You can in the mean time turn down the treble on the bass or amp and it will get closer to your old sound.

I use furniture cream on my strings when I change them , if you rub it into the strings a couple of times a day for a few days it will dull the brightness out. Make sure theres no silicone in the cream though.

eat a bucket of KFC and play your bass without washing your hands.
