Extentions for strings that were cut to short

Sign in to disble this ad
First off, obviously, this looks UGLY UGLY UGLY So no need to make this thread about aesthetics.

I only post this so those who may need to extend a short string will know that it can be done.

I did this because these are fairly expensive Tomasik Infeld Jazz Round wound strings that I did not want to throw away just because they were cut to short.

All I did was to loop together and twist the end of the string and a piece of 19 gauge galvanized steel wire. You must use the correct wire that is both flexible and will not break.

Worked great. Stays in tune.

That's great. Very utilitarian. Sort of a cross between art, and ugh.

How does it sound? Lose a lot of sustain doing that?

I did not notice any loss of sustain or sound quality.

really? that stays in tune and you hear no difference in sound from a non extended string? i'd imagine that the tuning must not be that sensitive? how tight is the wrap?

IMHO - i'd strongly suggest wearing eye protection while playing.
they'll be no warning the moment one o' those wraps decides to pop. but, hey, different strokes.

Yeah, I'd be scared to play that like it is. The g-string looks the most dangerous (aren't they all ).

Nice work.

Honestly, I can't imagine them staying in tune.

If they stay in tune, cool.

Joe

PS. Are you going to buy some new strings?

They actually do stay in tune. Again, you have to use the right wire.

Yes on the new strings. It is just really hard to throw away $ 70.00 strings. And I agree, leaving them like that for a long time would make me nervous.

The best way to avoid cutting your strings off to short is to measure the new string against the old string that you just removed. Cut it to the same length and your good to go. I've been doing it this way for over twenty years with 100% success.

I'm thinking you must have at least $20 in labor into that.

Did "you" cut them too short or were they just too short for this bass? Just curious.

As noted, I'd be worried about those breaking loose and hitting me. $70 vs. an injury?

When I was starting out and poor, I cut a string too short and extended it in similar fashion. It stayed in tune just fine.

When I was starting out I used less expensive strings. Then again when I was starting out flatwounds were the standard

I've done his in the past, never for more than a day or two, just for emergencies, says in tune fine, one did pop on me but it was the bass string that snapped and the wire kep it from flying out!

If you could work some duct tape into this whole process, it would be just about perfect.
