f# b e a?

i believe the geniuses at warwick are making the dark lord version of my favourite bass, the vampyre, with that tuning?

being in a quite frankly cr*p financial situation i cannot afford it

"but," i think to myself, "why don't i just buy the string the use on a dark lord and thread them onto my rockbass corvette?"

would that work? i'm sure in my amateurish ignorance i have overlooked some specification problems

or would it be better to put them on my Vintage five string so i have f# b e a d?

any opinions or suggestion would be greatly appreciated

thanks,

Alky

you would have to get a new nut, or file yours out a bit. on either bass you would have to do that

why would you want notes that low anyways? I thought the B was a little overkill myself...

My personal 4 is tuned to octave down E - it's a great way to explore.

As soon as Warwick decides to make these strings available there is no reason you can't put that string on any bass you like - provided it's a 34" scale. As stated earlier, you will have to modify your nut (I strongly suggest you replace it so the thick string can sit as high as it needs to) at very least. If you thread your strings through any part of your bass or bridge you will have to file out that hole as well - but only to about 3/16"

There will be a couple of other sources for strings of that sort soon. Nobody is making this gauge of string in huge quantities, and they are difficult/time consuming to wind so they are going to be expensive either as singles or as sets.

Similar gauges are available already at Conklin's string page. You can get an idea of what you will have to spend there.

mostly because the tunning would annoy my band members because they would have to work out what to put to riffs i make using the strings

but also because at full volume at a gig it would sound pretty awesome and it would open up some possibilities of new realms of bassiness.

also it would look pretty cool and it sound impressive specs wise, it has to be said

Conkliin makes a .165 available, which is too light in my opinion, and it costs $25. They also sell a .195, which is closer to the correct gauge for that tuning, and that string costs $35.

The Warwick Black Label is a .175 - I got to play that Dark Lord and listen to it - I still feel as though it wasn't tight enough. With the experimenting I've done with string gauges .185 or .190 on a 34" scale is about right.

I can see somebody getting frustrated with that tuning, you know, not being able to handle a whole 7 steps lower, and totally just tuning it down to sub-octave standard tuning

Nah, that's not really what you want. If you really want to "open up some possibilities of new realms of bassiness", save up some money and click the link in knuckle_head's signature

Do it right, from the start.

Bass Below - I love you man!

5-3-10-4 - if your intention is to invest in strings and not a new bass then I suggest investing in the .195 as either an F#, octave E string or drop E bottom string. There will be better solutions soon but that string will give you decent tension and adequate tone to go that low.

It's all a compromise until your willing to address all of the issues with going this low, but the .195 is available and you can order it right now if you want to explore sooner rather than later on the (relative) cheap.

FWIW you should try and get a .135 .100 and .075 to sit in with the .195

He's saying you should do this:

F# - .195

B - .135

E - .100

A - .075

That'll somewhat get you where you want to go, for now. If you really want to get to a place that some people on this thread are too closed minded to understand, you should consider my earlier advice

I have attempted to tune my B string down to an A for laughs. This thread however brings an idea to me. I need a B string that is abotu 140 so that its nto so damn loose. A nice tight B string would make me happier than an nice tight G-String
