What is that little wrap of fabric around the tuning end of the string?
Is it ubiquitous or just some brands?

How do I find the results of the type of strings poll?

The wraps are common for a few reasons:
-Wraps help to keep the string winding held together as it terminates.
-Wraps help to minimize metal to metal contact and thus reduces the wear on chrome tuners.
-Wraps can look cool!

Some string constructions don't need the silk, but it doesn't hurt and seems to only help by having it.

You mean in the stickied thread? You can vote and then see the results or I think you should be able to just click see results without voting.
