Fat Beams + Bongo = WOW!!!

Sign in to disble this ad
Well, the bongo still had the stock EB slinkys that came from the factory. they were getting old, so replaced them with DR Fat Beams... WOW!!! the sound is incredible... i've only just installed though, so i will need a day or two of playing to see how they sound...

the first thought that came to mind was that the EB's had slightly more mids, whereas the DR's have slightly more treble...

the big test will be at church this weekend, it will be interesting to see how they sound in a mix...

I love DR strings.

I still have not gotten round to trying the entire range, but have used the Fat Beams and the Lo-Riders. So far the Lo-Riders are my favourite.

Good choice you made.

sorry for the delay, i've been at work...

OK, after about an hour of playing, i am starting to notice some discernable differences between the Fat Beams (FB's) and the EB Slinkys.

with the eq set flat, the slinkys had more bottom than the fb's. they were also noticeably softer to play, with the fb's being considerably coarser than the Slinkys. the fb's sound more piano like to my ears(ala nathan east and marcus miller) than the slinky's, which sounded more like flea's tone or tony levin's tone.

i must say that the fb's have a much more musical top end, with the higher notes(above 12th fret) coming to life much more. but, the slinkys had the louder and more defined mids and harmonics. i don't know why the fb's can't reproduce the same harmonics, maybe they need more stretching and playing in before the harmonics develop, i don't know.

as far as slap tone(i don't slap very often), i would say that its a matter of preference. if you like MM's slap tone, then you will like the fb's. if you like a dirtier and more classical EBMM slap sound, then you will prefer the slinkys.

i think overall, i am happier with the fb's on the bongo.

Eh. You've only put the DRs on recently. Just wait. Before I go on... I'm a huge proponent of DR strings - you've been warned ^_^

DRs sound best once you really put some wear on them. I had a set of Fat Beams on my RKB900 for a year and the sounds they emitted were simply astounding. Big, round, full, and even, all across the board with full harmonic content. When you initially string'em up, they're really coarse and bright. Once you beat the crap out of them, they come to life again in a really cool way.
