Faulty Strings?

Sign in to disble this ad
Just put flats on my Jazz Hwy1. Problem: On the E String only, the blue clothy "sock" up by the tuners extends too far down, over the nut! This changes the string height compared to the rest. Not good. The "sock" is only about half way on the nut so it's close, but just a bit too far. They are long scale strings and the neck is long scale so that's not the problem. Is there anything I could do to fix this? Or should I return them?

thanks TB'ers

I had that happen with some Chromes on a p bass. I just made a cut in the nylon wrap and unwound it until it was past the nut. Then nylon got all frayed after a week or so but it didn't change the sound or feel of the string and I ran them for 2 years with no issue.

I think he's saying the tapered portion is in the nut causing it to sit too low as well. Problem with chromes, i presumed long scale meant 34-35'' but my Schecter requires the XL's or whatever. The "super long" version of the strings.

Not faulty, you just bought the wrong length.

@mmbongo

uhh... "Problem: On the E String only, the blue clothy "sock" up by the tuners extends too far down, over the nut!"

So I didn't buy the wrong length. I'll go with BoRadBass's suggestion.

thanks team TB!

You did, but that suggestion may allow you to use them. Next time buy the long scale ones. On my Pbass I have the ECB81 set, that one will not have silk over the nut on a Jazz... unless maybe you have a string-through jazz?

The reason it affects only the E string is that it is the one closest to the nut.

It is also possible a short E got mixed up in the wrong set... but that would be less likely. If you post a picture we can tell for sure which of these possibilities is the real one. If you got a bad set, you should be able to get a replacement free of charge, I'm sure.

Well if you already knew the answer, and you're smarter than all of us, then why did you come here asking what you did wrong?

You bought the wrong length. They're too short. Deal with it.
