I ask this, but I seriously doubt you're going to find a consensus here -- there are pros and cons for every brand. You're going to have to try a few before you settle in on your personal fave.
Personally, I use D'addario Chromes for both my fretted and my fretless Jazz. I'm looking to get a P-bass soon and I've got a set of slightly used RotoSound 66s that I'm saving for that.

I prefer Stainless Steel strings on my basses as you can see.
The question is "what tone are you looking for? |

For a non-round my faves are Smith Compressors and GHS Pressurewounds - identical except for the low B which is a little better - for me anyway - on the Smiths. |

| | | | I'm on Newtone strings.
They make what I need for me at a high quality and a fair price.
They are also great do deal with. |

D'Addario Chromes on my Precision
Currently using DR Phat Beams on my 5 string Jazz but will using Pro Steels when the time comes for a change.
DR's are an awesome string but I can't afford them any more and the Pro Steels sound pretty awesome as well for $10 less per pack. It's a matter of economics at this point for me.
