Question Favorite GROUNDwounds for Fretless

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi. Looking at a fresh set of groundwounds for my fretless Stingray 4.
Difficult to find info on grounds. Anybody have preferences they'd like to share?

Thanks!

I'm really liking the sound of the Nickel S.I.T. Silencer's I put on my J/MM bass. Especially now that they've been on a couple weeks and are starting to tone down even more.

This is more advice AGAINST a particular brand of groundwound/halfwound string - I bought some Rotosound halfwounds and I was personally quite appalled by the quality! The feel was HORRIBLE, for example when trying to execute double stops on the D&G strings the strings would 'grip' onto the pads of your fingers some application of fast fret exasperatingly made it worse

They sounded positively O.K in the beginning and almost sounded quite...'bland'(?) as they died down. Just didn't like them at all.

I have GHS Brite flats on my p and like them a lot (The P is fretted BTW)

I use LaBella tape wound on my fretless and dig them a lot! They are a round wound string with a nylon tape outer wrap.

GHS pressurewounds are great, I've used them on my fretless basses for years and also on my Warwick (fretted) to tame some of the bark. I tried the D'Addario's once and hated 'em. Way too grippy/rough on the fingers.

Any idea of the differences between the Pressurewounds & Briteflats?

GHS Briteflats are roundwounds that have the outside wrap literally ground off to produce a falt surface. they have the brighter side of the round but the flatwound feel.
GHS Compressors or roundwound, but they are literally "squashed" by rollers to make them feel smooth. They both are good strings, and their sound lies somewhere beween flats and rounds in terms of warmth.
I have use both and like both and would highly recommend them.

Ken Smith Compressorwounds are my favorite strings for fretless. I love the way they feel and sound. Very, very articulate.
