Fender flats for Fender AV ´62 Jazz Bass?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi!

I was thinking of trying out a set of flatwounds on my j. I´m a noob player and I´ve actually never played a bass with flats - I just know that many of my favorite albums feature players using flats, so I thought I´d give flats a try.
I have my eyes set on the Fender 9050MLs, partly because they´re cheap and easy to get a hold of, and partly because I´d like a round, thumpy, vintagey sound.

Anyone have any advice for or against this choice? Will the tension be ok with the j-neck?

The neck will handle any string, unless there's an issue with it.

The new Fender flats are very nice strings, and an excellent choice for a new flatwound player.

I always suggest La Bella 760FL flats, but the Fender are every bit as good.

You will get a lot of suggestions of TI Jazz Flats. Great strings, but they are unique.

Awesome. Thanks!

The LaBellas were the ones I originally looked at, but I can get the Fenders a whole lot cheaper - so I think I´m just going to go for it. I´m first and foremost just seeing if I like flats. =)

The classic Fender flats are definitely vintage sounding but they are also extremely hgh tension. The new ones are said to be just like Chromes.

For a first time flat user I would suggest a set of Chromes. Pretty traditional tone medium tension and pretty affordable.

Thanks for the replies guys!

I actually ended up ordering a set of 9050MLs last night, cost me $30 including shipping to Norway.

Can´t wait to try em out!

So, you've already bought, but I will throw out Rotosound Jazz 77's as a nice flatwound. I have "J" pickups and really liked the sound and tension (across all five strings). They are different, for sure, and heavier (usually) at 45-135 for the five string set. Also, being made in England might be easy to find in Europe?

Those might be a bit too high in tension for you. If so, look into LaBella 760FLs or Chromes in the medium light or light guages. TI's are great but I didn't like them on my Jazz bass, they sound better on P-basses to me.

The best prices I've found on Labellas are at Imperial Guitars...about half of what Juststrings.com charges.

Now I´m getting scared.. I can´t do push-ups with my pinkies, so we´ll see if the tension makes my bass unplayable.. But I needed to start my search somewhere, and I´ll just sell or trade them if they don´t suit me.

They´re probably arriving today or tomorrow, so I´ll post my impressions as soon as I try them out.

Finally got them today..

So far I´m loving them, haven´t recorded anything yet - but I like the feel, real smooth.. The tension doesn´t seem bad at all. Think I´m going to get along just fine with these strings. =)

Thanks man!

It´s an awesome bass! I had a bit of a clearance sale when I moved my studio a while back, but I still feel a bit spoiled because I´m learning to play on such a nice bass..
