Fender Flats.......wow

Last night I went to go see a local band play and I noticed that the sound was really good. Particularly the bass tone, it was loud, solid and had just the right amount of cut in the mix. I was talking to the bass player after the show about his gear and he said he was using Fender flats in the 50-100 gauge. He was using the flats on a Fender American standard jazz bass too through an Ampeg B something head and SVT HLF 410 cab.
Those fender flats were the first ones I tried of the flatwound strings a little while back. I loved them but have since been on a kind of hunt for the best flats (having tried Rotosound flats, Dean Markley flats and labellas so far). I guess I just forgot how great those fender flats sound, think i'll be making the switch here pretty soon from my labellas back to the fenders.
I have another questions though, have any of you had much experience w/ the Fender flats in the heavy gauge 55-105? Based upon how the 50-100 mediums feel, I imagine the heavier gauge would be crazy tense. I want to put the heavier set on my G&L American SB-2 and the medium set on my american st. jazz bass but I dont know if the SB-2 can handle the tension. i'll probably just end up putting the 50-100's on both........ |
