Fender Mustang Strings: Possible or Impossible?

Sign in to disble this ad
Here's what I'm hoping to find. High Tension flats that will fit my Mustang bass. Maybe something like .50 .70 .85 .105. I have found that short scale strings are too short. And the LaBella "760FL Mustangs" are light gauge strings, and probably won't have the high tension I like. Am I asking for the impossible?

Try some medium-scale strings.

Most of the long scale strings work on the mustang. I never use short scale or medium scale strings on mine.

D'Addario offers medium scale flats that will fit a Mustang. Most short-scale flats are too short.

Thanks for the replies. If I could find a set of medium scale flats in the .050-.105 neighborhood, that's what I would buy. If not, I might take a chance on a long scale set. I guess I'm just a little worried about the strings breaking: 1) at the bridge because of the Mustang string through body, and 2) at the tuning peg if I cut a long scale set. Am I thinking too much?

Not too much, some strings can/will break like that. LaBellas for example. But not all brands will break.

You can always peel/unwrap the tuner end a bit, if you're having trouble getting good winds on the tuning peg. People poo-poo this quite a bit, but it's always worked well for me. Of course, you'll have to cut the peeled wrap off cleanly "above" the nut.
