Unhappy Fender P Bass E String Query

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi. Can anyone please advise. I have a 1970's Precision Bass and have pretty well always used Rotosound Swing Bass strings (long scale). Does anyone else ever have a problem with the E string where it appears just that little bit too long and the full thickness (cross section) of the string starts to wrap aroung the machine head. The other 3 strings are all fine. I find this just doesn't look right and wonder if it is affects the sustain. Has anyone else experienced this or am I just worrying about nothing? Thanks in advance.

I'm not sure exactly what you mean, but no, wrapping the large part of the string around the post shouldnt decrease sustain.

OK thanks. It's just odd that the top 3 strings all wrap neatly around the posts entirely on the thinner 'lead-in' part of the string whearas the E starts to wrap on the full thickness. I didn't really think it would affect the sustain although I do remember Rotosound did some strings in the 80's where the length of string that passed over the bridge was much thinner than the rest of the string and I seem to remember they claimed it improved sustain. I've also always felt the bottom E on my Precision was a bit flat (thought there might have been some conncection).
