Fender Pure Nickels - review

Sign in to disble this ad
I put a set of Fender 7150M pure nickel roundwounds on a Fender MIA P-bass. This is the first time trying out pure nickels; they're good! It's a nice balance somewhere between nickel plated roundwounds and stainless steel flats. It gives the thumpy P-bass tone without the thud of flats. Finger noise is greatly reduced, too. Setup wise, there was no problems with intonation. They stay in tune, too.

I've had these on the bass for a couple of weeks and they settled in well. Last night was the first time playing them in a band setting. It was impressive how there was no problem being heard in the mix. All the while, there's that deep, thick low end with the traditional P-bass tone.

The only thing that I'd say be aware of is that these strings are kind of loose for hard pick playing. The strings buzzed and the action would have to be raised. For fingerstyle, the action can still be set low.

In summary, I like these strings and will buy them again.

Out of all of Fender's new rounds, I like the pure nickels the best.

I have these on a Road worn precision that i bought in the classifieds last fall. They shipped with the bass, and i assume they were what sold with the bass new (or changed soon afterwards) because the seemed pretty old when i got them.

However, i replaced them with steels, and didnt like it, then with nickel steels, and still it just wasnt the same, so i put back on the old beat up nickels, and loved it.
I have had these old fender nickels on my precision for 8 months (so they have been on the bass probably more then a year) and it sounds amazing. I doubt i will ever have to change strings. Its just the beauty of nickels, they last soooo long, especially on a precision.

I tried these a few months ago. I liked the tone and the playability, but they went dead way too fast for my liking.
