Fender & Squier OE Strings

Sign in to disble this ad
On last Wednesday I bought a Deluxe J/Active bass and it had the suckiest strings on it! I replaced them with Elixir Nanos (the ones with the cat fur that I like) and it really sounds so much better now. The OE strings on it looked like D's in Nickel with colored ball ends.

I (today) bought another bass - this time a Squier by Fender VM '70s Passive J Bass, and I find these string are really quite nice! They have red silk, top and bottom like my ROTO 77s, but I bet they are NOT ROTOS at all - but something Fender throws on the gear they make. These I can and will keep on it.

I wonder why on the more expensive bass they put the worst strings?

Heres a guess, a customer wanted to hear the bass with new strings so the shop through on whatever they had lying around.

I just bought a new MIM 60s jazz, the silks were black.

Like these?

These are the ones that had the colored ball ends.

According to Fender they are Fender Super Bass 7250ML, NPS,
Gauges: (.045, .065, .080, .100), p/n 073-7250-005

...and I took them off as fast as I could for the Elixir Nanos.

I recently bought some of the "old" nickel plated Fender strings and they had red silks.

yep, mine were exactly like those, even the frayed silk looked the same.

I should mention that the bass was new but had been in the store for 4 years before I bought it.

Those strings must be worth a small fortune. They were 'aged to perfection' not unlike a fine wine or cheese and yet were still new.
