Fender Tapewound Tension

Sign in to disble this ad
I've been using Flats almost exclusively for the past 3 years now, mostly Chromes but also the Fender Flats. I recently tried the Fender Tapewounds because I like the smooth feeling and the added brightness.

I like the sound a lot, the E sounds a little week compared to my flats but I can compromise there. The biggest issue is that they are floppy compared to the tension of my flats that I'm used to. And I like to find a brand with a little more tension possibly.

I know that they are thinner gauged roundwounds that are wrapped to create the thickness. But are there any other brands of tapewounds, that that have a roundwound core that carry more tension than the Fenders?

I don't want to go to flatwound core that is tapewound because I like the zing that the roundwound core gives.

There are several opinions as to which has round or flatwounds under that core, so I cannot really tell which is which. I too love the sound of those Fender tapes, but the require a super light touch and get out of tune quickly if you apply too much pressure and accidently bend them.
I've also used LaBella tapes, and they are fantastic tapes, but their tension was a little more than I wanted, plus the fact they are very thick, which felt strange to me.
I currently use GHS Tapes, which split the difference tension wise between the first too, and their gauges (.50-.105) don't feel so honkin big to me.
I have yet to try the new D'addario Tapes which are smaller gauged like the GHS ones, but are supposed to have tension levels similar to LaBella.
