First foray into flatwound world

Finally broke a string on my fretless fourstring. Usually string her up with D'Addario Nickel Halfies, but guess I forgot to restock or the backup set fell out of my gigbag, or something.

Had a set of Dean Marley BlueSteel Flatwounds for a fiver sitting around. Don't know why, but an online string store sent them with a set of roundwound Bluesteel I ordered for my active 5. So now have an extra B lying around with no match.

Stopped using roundwounds on the fretless back in the early 80s because they were starting to leave small grooves in the ebony board. Long gone now - rubbed away by the halfies, I guess.

Have had 'em on for three days now. They are very thumpy and don't seem to sustain much at all unless you really press down firmly.

Excited to see how they work out. Playing a jazzy trio gig this weekend. They make the Ripper sound a little more like an upright, so maybe that will make the old gents happy. If I play up on the fingerboard itself it really sounds like and upright - but the tone is too poofy for my taste.

Always have wanted to try flatwounds, so I'm happy I was kind of forced to take the plunge! If they don't work out can always go back to halfies.

By the by. If you had an old passive P and an old Ric 4001, which would you use flats on? Just curious. Both sport Roto66 rounds now.

+1 on the P. If you're looking for a home for that B string, let me know.
