First string change...

I'm thinking about changing the stock strings on my Yamaha RBX374 for the first time since I got it. Since I bought it from eBay, I'm not sur ewhat strings came on it or what size they are.

If I pick a set of strings that are heavier or lighter than the strings already on it, will I have to have it re-set up? And can anyone give me any suggestions on which strings to go with? I'm mostly playing stuff from an instructional book--with hopes of classic/modern rock.

1. Yes, if you install a lighter or heavier gauge set of strings, you'll probably have to adjust the neck's truss rod and perhaps the bridge saddle heights. Might have to adjust pickup height as well.
Do you have a local music shop you could take it to? If so, they could check the gauge of your current strings and find a comparable set.

2. Your bass probably came with roundwound strings on it. Most common gauges are usually "medium", something like a 45-65-85-100 (or 105) Roundwounds have a nice sustain and growl, but they sound warm to me as well.

Might I suggest DR Hi Beams? They are stainless steel roundwounds, roundcore, and have a nice tone. They keep that new sound longer than many other strings I've used. They aren't the least expensive string out there, but they aren't the priciest either.

Read through this forum. Do some searches. Try to get an idea of what you want before you go down to a shop and have them try to sell you something they have on hand, instead of something that you want. There's alot of info here on doing your own setups too.

Thank you Magneto. There is a local music shop here that is a Yamaha dealer. The owner gave me a hard time about buying my bass from eBay when i first got it, but I've been back a few times and they seem to be pretty cool now. They said a setup is like $20-$25 plus the cost of strings. I'll do some research on the strings here!

You have been a ton of help, thanks again.
