Sign in to disble this ad
So I've decided to try something new(to me). I want to change the strings on my Peavey Cirrus(currently strung BEADG) to piccolo strings tuned EADGC. I just wanted your suggestions on brands, what experiences you've had, adjustment/set-up changes i might have to make, any tips, etc. thanks alot!

Getting a pre-packaged set in non-standard gauges like that could be a tricky proposition. Most bricks 'n' mortar stores are not going to have much selection available. Try JustStrings.com, and see what makes/models they have available on a single string basis, so you can choose the exact gauge you want for each string.

Regarding set-up, you'll most likely need to swap in a new nut, with string slots cut to fit the new, lighter-gauge strings. A truss rod adjustment and a tweaking of the action and the intonation will probably be in order as well.

A Peavey Cirrus tuned EADGC is going to sound super crisp, sharp and clear. You should be able to play some excellent chordal material on it. A few months ago, I played a Cirrus 5 (in standard tuning) for the first time, and was absolutely blown away by the crystalline clarity of it...

I bought a six string set and discarded the B string. Use it on a MM Stingray 5 with Status neck. Only had to adjust intonation but didn't touch the nut. Love the bass this way! Next string change I will buy a 4 string set online and add an individual string for the c. +1 on Just Strings. Good selection and service. My teacher says a low B string is useless because it only gives you four extra notes wheras the high c is much more useful. After plaing this way for a while I think I agree. Also it makes the transition from 4 to 5 string very easy for those having difficulty going up to a 5er. Just my $.02
