To the Flat Fanatics...

...ever been surfing some random bass pics or classifieds and come across a pic of say, a 55 Precision or a 58...let's say a real deal 62 Jazz for sale, and it's wearing rounds? Does this drive other people nuts too, or am I alone? I know there are lot's of fully plausible reasons for this but my flattened brain can not compute! Stop bastardizing these hisorical treasures! Please! (But all kidding aside, use the string of your preferance)

My 62 P AVS is wearing a set of Labella flats (jamerson set) right now...and for ever!

Some people don't like muddy thump.

I like TI flats on my P, sometimes, depending on the songs we play.

Doesn't bother me.

Sometimes I think about how fret-wear might be a problem if someone has stainless rounds on a vintage bass, but that kind of thing doesn't seem to affect value.

It doesn't bother me either. The first thing I'd think about is what kind of fret wear I may be dealing with. Much like the Jasper said ^^^^^^^^

This doesn't bother me nearly as much as seeing a great vintage amp sporting crappy new tubes.

I used to hate on flats. No sustain, muddy, etc. Then I recently started playing in a band again and we cover the classics so I brought a then recent purchase that came with flats on and I was all, "duh, no wonder I could never cop the old school bass sound- I have been using rounds!"

So now I keep some basses with flats for those gigs and all the others have rounds.

Regarding vintage basses and the opening comments, I thik it is all subjective. For examle, a 70s j bass can go either way but I personally would only put flats on an old semi hollow.

That is my $.02

Funny. I played a 64 with rounds and thought it worked. But they were kinda dead. So there you go! LOL

Thank you

It's only me projecting my preferenes onto the bass world as a whole. More of a fun jab, for lack of a better term. I'm more or less referring to online auctions that promote the "pure vintage-ness of this awesome specimen left almost untouched for four decades". Not on folk's preferences. But seriously...who would string a 58 P with rounds?

Many basses, on which you would expect flats, are on display with rounds. In a big music store where I go quite frequently, even the fretless basses are strung with rounds.

Depending on the gig, I would.

I think TB, a large of a community as it is, makes up a fraction of bass players worldwide.
This being said I don't think every bassist who has the basic knowledge to replace the strings on their bass necessarily has the advanced knowledge of different types of windings, cores, tensions etc.
This is especially true for the players who get into bass later on in life, where there idea of the perfect form of vintage bass is a pre CBS Fender strung with rounds. I believe that they'd be more in touch with the correct "vintage" equipment if they started playing in the appropriate era. Instead the only information they're being fed is from the 14 year old at the local music shop, and unfortunately not the wealth of knowledge here on TB.
