Flat wounds for heavy hard rock with od/fuzz...?

Sign in to disble this ad
is that a go? yes? sounds good? with a Jazz Bass or what i'm thinking of playing for a project here is...a Squier CV 60's P Bass with flat wounds...it's heavy hard music and kinda cartoony in a way...with over drive and Big Muff...will flats sound good like that? or rounds? i'm hoping flats will be killier...but if you guys think not, i'll consider rounds...

oh...any good examples of flats with fuzz/over drive? any recordings or bands you can refer me to for examples of this kinda sound?

Ask Steve Harris. They suit him fine. So much so he has a signature set.

Also, take a listen to the band Dub Trio. Stu Brooks uses an Atelier Jazz bass, with flatwounds and PLENTY of distortion. Try the tune "not for nothing"....amazing tone.

Whoa, thank you so much for posting that. I'm sure I'll be spinning all their albums constantly for awhile.

Stu is one of my faves I have all of their released stuff, and his basslines are epic. It's my understanding that they tune really low, like C or C sharp. He uses the Labella Jamerson set and says those strings are a big part of his sound.

Man, that is an incredibly grindy, cutting distortion. I also feel compelled to write lyrics to that song.

The new Fender 9050CL set 45-60-80-105 has great playability and consistency, are rather inexpensive, and growl nicely. I use them, and I think they sound great. Since flats by their nature have a little less high end to them, IMO they drive fx better so the character of the fx comes through and not just an overload of high end fizzy.

I use a Fender P with chromes through a VT Deluxe into a GK 1001RB II through an Ampeg 810E and get a simular tone to what was in the video......

Steve Harris Rotosounds are awesome! I use 'em with fuzz, OD, drop "C" and they shine.

I do not agree about the Rotos. Steve does not use fuzz/overdrive and for a reason..it doesnt sound good. I would go for rounds.

It can sound good but you're gonna need A LOT of midrange.

You don't like a fuzz driven bass tone? Did you listen to the link I attached? That is a great bass tone. To each their own, but I could almost guarantee Harris has used fuzz from time to time.
