Flat wounds on Jay Turser Violin Bass

Sign in to disble this ad
I just purchased used a Jay Turser JTB-2B/VS Violin Bass. All the reviews I read stated that it is best use flatwound strings. I tried to use D'Addario ECB82 Chromes for a 34" scale because iI read that the trapeze bridge makes it impossible to use short scale strings. I started with the E string which was a .105. Because the strings were long the winding did not land in the tuner. The string bent and cracked (that was a waste of $). Was this because it was a .105 and would a .095 E string not have cracked. I want to put flats on it but I don't want to keep distroying sets of strings.

Can anyone tell me what flatwounds they have on any Hofner copy?

Thanks
Tom

It's because the bass is a short scale, and the big E string doesn't like to fit around the tiny posts on your JTVB.

LaBella makes strings that fit Hofner-style basses; they taper when they pass the nut, making it a lot easier for them to fit around the peg. Plus they sound FANTASTIC - I have a set on my Epiphone Rivoli.

+1 on the LaBella Beatle Bass flats. I have them on my Rogue and they are killer.

Huge, huge sound.

I put ECB81M's .045-.100 on my Douglas Violin bass. They fit fine.

You have to use medium scale strings on a violin bass. It's short scale, but the trapeze tailpiece adds a couple inches to the string length, so you have to use medium scale. Me, I tried Roto flats, but really, I like it much better with rounds. Turns it from a one trick pony into a rather versatile bass. I gig with mine fairly often.

I put TI short scale flats on my Hofner Club Bass. Perfect!! Incredible sound!

I read on the Hofner site that they recommend light gauge strings to protect the neck -I don't know if it is the same for the JT.
