Flat Wounds on a Rickenbacker

Sign in to disble this ad
Right now I'm using RotoSound and D'Adddario flat wound strings. If I put those on a Rickenbacker what is that going to sound like? I'm sure someone has played with that set up before and I'd like to hear what they thought about it.

I played a Rickenbacker today with a standard string set and I was pretty impressed with the sound over all but I wonder if I'm going to loose all the sound characteristics if I put a set of flat wound strings on it.

I personally love the feel and sound of the flat wound and can't ever see myself going back to regular strings.

Yes. It will not sound the same. It will sound like a bass with flats on it. No matter what anyone wants to say, flats will sound VERY different from rounds (unless you mute / turn down the tone on the bass with the rounds...)

That's the way they came new back in the day, with RIC flats. Sounds pretty good actually.

I use D' Addario ENR71 Half Rounds on my 06 4003 with at toaster neck pup. Is that what you're asking about? Or are you talking about the Chromes?

Do it. Prior to joining Talkbass I was always a rounds player. The guys on here convinced me to try flats. Now I'm hooked.

I have D'Addario Chromes (flats) on my 4003 and really like them. They're punchy and brighter than most flatwounds so they match the Ric's natural brightness well IMO.

All the classic Bee Gees pre-disco albums feature a Rickenbacker with flatwounds... One of my favorite bass tones of all time...

Gents -
Thanks for all the input...

Yes I was using D'Addario Chrome but switched over to the RotoSound Nylon. I actually think the sound better on my bass than the Chromes did. Could just be that instrument and pickups, I don't know. Plus they feel better on my hands, which I didn't think anything could feel as nice as Flat Wound once I tried them.

I agree I am hooked on Flat Wound, I'll never go back to Round Wound. They are like dragging your fingers across a wood file.

Check out Tubifer, Pawn Shop or Baba Boom Time. All played on a Ric 4003 with GHS flats. Neck pickup only.

I put a set of TI jazz flats on my 4001 the day I bought it .

I was looking for a nice thick old school Ric thump . Got it .
