Question Flat wounds that slap and pop?

Sign in to disble this ad
I know it's kinda an oxymoron, but I was pleasantly surprised that I was able to get a descent pop outta the Sadowsky flats. Not a terribly good slap, but not horrible either. The TIs on the other hand are pretty dead when it comes to slap and pop.

Any flat wound strings that can slap and pop decently?

I've got Rotosound 77's on my P Bass and they've got a nice slap sound. What I've found with flats is that you can still get the same sound with slap, you just have to slap it harder. I think most flats sound dull when you try to pop, it sounds more like a normal picked note than it does a pop. Rotosounds seem to be pretty good, atleast better than Chromes.

I don't really play any slap bass, I think the technique is overdone a bit and doesn't sound that good (maybe I'm just making excuses because I suck at slap). If you really want to get into slap, roundwounds are the way to go. I hardly play any slap anymore, which is funny because watching slap bass on youtube is the reason I switched from playing guitar.

Of course, if you want to impress someone, slap is the way to go. Play a little bit of Higher Ground or Blackeyed Blonde and everyone thinks you're amazing.

Try some D'Addario Hald Rounds (light) - it's a good compromise.

Chuck Rainey used a p bass with flats on Steely Dan's "Peg" so I know that it can be done really well but I don't use flats so it is hard to say what string would work best.

YES!! D'Addario chromes slap/pop surprisingly well. BUT... it's the "old school" type of slap like Chic/Sly & Family Stone, not percussive like Victor Wooten or Flea.

Anybody Slapping Flats?

The Sadowskys I have on now are on par with rounds for slap, easily.

+4 for Chromes - good slap tone for up to a month, even on Fretless

Chromes and some EQing will get you close, but if you want mid range thump it's best to get some rounds.
