Flats on a 5 string. respectable low B

Sign in to disble this ad
I've decided to try flats on my 5-string Am Dlx P bass. I would like something similar in tension to DR Lo-Riders (maybe a little higher in tension). I've read that the LaBella Flats seem to give a more vintagy-thumpy sound. Not looking for bright or aggressive at all.

How are the low B's for the LaBella's or DR Flat's? Any other suggestions?

I tried Chromes on an Active Jazz V and the Low B was good.
Nice and tight. The bass had so much more fundamental and bottom that it gave me a headache when I played it!

chromes all the way. I had a set for almost a year, no intonation issues, they are my backup, just tried out the half rounds, so far so good.

I put Crome flats on my Spector Euro and the B sounded like a thud. Really bad so, I just string the EADG up with flats and leave the B as a steel or nickel. Not to mention, the 4 string packs are much cheaper and you can pick up a seperate B elsewhere. Now, Ive got killer tone acrooss the neck.

The Sadowsky flats I tried had a nice B (taperwound) but the B and E sounded much darker than the A, D, and G. The low strings were thuddy like LaBellas or Dean Markleys whilst the high ones were bright and sustainy like D'Addario Chromes. I've heard of at least one other TBer who had the same problem. Dunno if it would get better over time but it was so distracting (particularly the difference in sustain) that I took them off after a couple days.

BigMikeW posted some sound clips of his Sadowsky PJ5 with Sadowsky flats that sounded killer. I'd start there.
