unplug or via the amp?

If unplug i don't think you will get any big sound when jamming.

If you play via a amp then you will have no problem, flats on acoustic means deep and warm sound.

I use Chromes on my Tacoma Thunderchief. Are they as bright as the standard bronze rounds... no, of course not. Do they sound just fine... yep, I think so. And on to the reason that flats have a place on acoustic bass guitar... no finger string noise, which is a very, very big plus... at least for me.

i usually dont plug in the acoustic and i do hate finger noise, maybe i ll check them out. I use ernie ball lights for electric on it now it gives me a cool twang for country pickin but lookin for smoother jam band feel. any suggestions on types of strings?

This one seriously bugs me.... I'd love to try out bronze flats if they existed. One of these days I'll have to sit down with a bunch of 1/2 upright, 1/4 upright and cello strings and figure that out as an alternative... guh

I just started a thread on this around a month ago which went unnoticed except for a few hits. I picked up an Ovation CC074 A/E bass, removed the original rounds and put a set of Thomastik Jazz Flats on it, and it sounds and feels amazing. I gig it amplified every week, and it cuts with both a pick and fingers. Nothiong but raves about the tone.

I've heard the lower tension on the TI's is a good thing for those lighter instruments too...

how's the unplugged tone/volume?

Charles_Hartman has TI Flats (IIRC) on his Ovation Acoustic 5, and it sounds really, really good. Doesn't project all that well unplugged, but plugged in it was very warm, very mellow sounding. Easy to play, and no string noise.
