From Flats back to Rounds. Little help with strings.

So yes I could do a search. But i think my question might be a little specifc and my search is broad.

So here goes.

I play a P-Bass.

I'm moving away from flats to recapture the grind I've been missing for so long (read: grind - chewy, harmonic, goodness)

I play with a pick almost exclusively with my current band.

I'm looking for strings that still keep a nice tight tension (though I will be re-setting my bass after the switch - of course) so my jump off Chromes won't be too much of a re-tooling of my technique

Last for a reasonable amount of time (2 months or regular playing) before they get the "thud" (read: Thud - no harmonics and a weak uninspiring fundamental.)

I do not need a ton of highs - but definition is nice.

I'm thinking Stainless but I really don't want to grind the crap out of the small frets on my P (1957 repro neck)

I'd like to stay under $20 for a set of four (so no DR I guess - unless they can go for three months)

I'm open to any and all brands - no snobbery here.

Thoughts?

thanks,

michael

I just picked up a set of Dean Markley SR2000s and put them on my Sterling. They sound killer. I used to play DR a lot, but these SR200s are great.

Thanks for the input.

Please repost and let us know how long they "lived" for.

When I used rounds, my choice was Ken Smith Burners.

My favorite 34" rounds are Ken Smith Rock Masters. They are a little mellower than the Burners, but have plenty round, sizzle goodness played finger or pick. They last longer for me then the Burners. When I'm not using flats, the Rock Masters are what I get. You can find them for $17 or $18.

I had used the classic Rotosounds for years before them and then EB Slinky's for a little while before settling on the Ken Smiths. The EBs remind me of the Burners - play attractively bright, but die quickly. The Rotos - I fell out of lust with Rush, and I wanted a mellower tone.

I would try Ernie Ball 45-100s or 45-105s. A little brighter, and tighter feeling than the Daddarios.

It's hard to tell anyone how long their strings will last. Some people burn through strings very quickly, others not fast at all.
