Flats on a Bongo. What did you think & DR Flats setup question

Sign in to disble this ad
I've read a bunch of posts/threads where folks have liked flats on their Bongo basses. I just got my 2nd Bongo. At the moment, both Bongos are strung with DR Marcus Miller strings, but especially on the newer bass the Marcus strings sound a little bright/zingy.

So....I've just ordered some DR flats to try on Bongo #2. DR Hi Beam flats to be clear. I've read threads that others have liked TI flats, but I figure I'll try the DRs first because (1) they're a familiar brand, (2) they're a lot cheaper than the TI's so my sunk cost is lower if I don't like flats.

Question:
For anybody who has gone from DR rounds to DR flats... have you had to adjust the neck on your bass at all or have you been able to just go with the neck as it "was" for rounds?

Thanks in advance!

As for readjusting the neck relief and string height - I'd recommend you to do it every time you try a new gauge or brand or model. When changing to flats a full setup would be useful, because of 1)increased tension (may require neck straightening) and 2)less string buzz (may allow you to lower string action).
