Flats - bridge winding question

Sign in to disble this ad
I just picked up a set of LaBella Deep Talkin' flats, and put them on my Lakland 55-02. They are strung through the bridge. The winding on the bridge end of the B string differs from the other strings, and differs from any round-wound I've seen: It tapers to the inner core where it crosses the bridge. Is this right/typical? I'm looking for confirmation that this is a standard winding approach, since this is my first experience with flat-wound strings.

I can understand that the flat windings on the fatter B string might have issues when breaking over the bridge. It just surprised me, since the round-wounds I have used don't do this.

This is a common winding practice; I've had several sets of roundwounds for a 4 string that have had this done to the E string.

Yeah, no problem. Bigger strings like E's and B's are often tapered like that for better stability and clarity, since bigger gauge strings can wobble around a lot.

It may have been done to ease the stress on the string since flats can be broken there, especially when used with body thru strung basses.
